It
was late 1997 and I was very excited about getting my
diploma in interior decorating and design and snagging a
cushy job in the same field. So much so that on a whim
and out of character I asked an advertising sales
representative if the editor of the woman's magazine she
worked for would be interested in a monthly decorating
column. My first published clip appeared in print in
February 1998. It took a few years before I realized that
I was smack in the middle of my childhood dream to be a
writer. That's when I signed up for a diploma course in
freelance writing. The monthly gig ran for eight years
while I wrote features and columns for other print and
online magazines.
During that time I discovered my voice, my style and my
specialties topics under the broad heading of
self-improvement, inspirational/motivational articles,
setting goals, time management and pursuing ones
dream.
In August 2006 I achieved my next great goal in life. I
left my nine to five job behind. I walked into the life
of a fulltime freelance writer with a commission to write
a weekly inspirational/motivational/reflection column for
the WomanWise Magazine, the Sunday pullout in a local
newspaper.
Since I have been working from home I have conquered my
fear of Internet technology. I post my articles at
several content sites, including Associated Content, created two blogs on Perspectives on life and Writing and joined Facebook and several other
social network sites where I keep intouch with other
writers, promote my articles and my blogs.
I continue to enjoy success having my work published
regularly online but I am expanding my borders by
enrolling for the freelance journalism course offered by
the Writers Bureau. Plus, with the global economy
in a downward spiral, it is a good time to upgrade my
skills and qualification for opportunities that might
arise down the road. The 28-module study is quite
comprehensive and will push me out of my comfort zone.
Although a bit scared, I am excited about the adventures
ahead.
That what writing continues to be for me an
adventurous journey, always learning, meeting wonderful
and gifted writers and being a part of the growing
community of writers. We are not only passionate about
writing, building our platforms and achieving our
individual goals, but we are just as passionate about
helping aspiring, beginning and working writers to pursue
and achieve theirs.
